NB-UVB is narrowband ultraviolet B light at a wavelength of 311 nm. This light calms overactive immune cells in the skin, thinning psoriasis plaques and reducing inflammation in eczema. It contains no cortisone and, when applied correctly, is a safe option; for this reason it is often chosen in widespread disease that does not fully respond to topical treatment.
Treatment is usually planned as two to three sessions a week. Each session lasts only a few minutes, typically three to eight. The starting dose is set according to skin type and raised gradually while response is observed. A typical course consists of about 20 to 30 sessions; this is tailored to each person according to the severity of the disease and the response achieved.
Safety is at the heart of the procedure. Protective goggles are worn at every session, and sensitive areas such as the face, the region around the eyes and the genital skin are shielded. The cumulative ultraviolet dose you receive is recorded with dosimetry, keeping the risk of burning and over-exposure to a minimum. NB-UVB is considered suitable in pregnancy and can be given safely in children with paediatric dosing.
At Clinovia we use phototherapy as part of a whole-person plan. Beforehand we assess light sensitivity and medication use, and support the barrier with ceramide moisturisers. We track response with PASI and EASI and, when needed, combine it with topical, systemic or biologic treatments. We run the process in five languages, tailored to each patient, with regular follow-up.
