Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema in which a weakened skin barrier drives itch and redness; it runs in flares and remissions and often settles in the body's flexures.

Signs and symptoms

Do you recognise these signs?

If one or more of these applies to you, we recommend a dermatological assessment.

  • Itchy, red and dry plaques in the elbow creases, behind the knees and on the neck
  • Intense itching that worsens at night, with scratch marks and thickened, leathery skin
  • Marked dryness and scaling, at times with weeping and crusting over the affected areas
  • A course that begins on infant cheeks and scalp, then settles into the flexures in childhood
Assess my condition

Causes and triggers

  • A skin-barrier defect linked to filaggrin gene changes and increased water loss
  • A personal or family history of atopy, frequently alongside hay fever and asthma
  • Barrier-disrupting triggers such as soap, hot showers, sweat, wool and dry air
  • Stress, skin infection and imbalance along the gut-skin axis acting as flare drivers
Cortisone-free protocol

How we treat it

01

A cortisone-free start: calcineurin and PDE-4 inhibitors to calm the inflammation

02

Ceramide barrier repair and regular moisturising to break the itch-dryness cycle

03

NB-UVB phototherapy for widespread disease and dupilumab-class biologics when severe

04

A systemic work-up covering vitamin D, zinc, iron and gut health where indicated

The Inside Out Approach

Why Clinovia?

Psoriasis and eczema are not only a surface problem. We assess the skin barrier, inflammation, nutrition and lifestyle, comorbidities and dermatological treatment together. Evidence-based dermatology remains the backbone; nutrition and lifestyle support that plan.

01

The Gut–Skin Relationship

We review digestive symptoms, dietary pattern and food-sensitivity history. The link between gut microbiome and inflammatory skin disease is still being researched, so it is addressed alongside — never instead of — dermatological treatment.

02

Cortisone-Free Protocol

First-line calcineurin and PDE-4 inhibitors, ceramide-based barrier repair and phototherapy instead of steroids; systemic and biologic steps when needed.

03

Systemic Repair

Vitamin D, zinc, omega-3 and iron levels plus thyroid and insulin resistance are screened, and any deficits found are built into the plan.

04

Measurable Follow-up

PASI/EASI and DLQI scores are tracked alongside laboratory values; steps that do not deliver a response are removed from the plan.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, relapsing condition that flares and settles for most people. Our aim is not to promise a cure but to repair the barrier, ease the itch and make flares less frequent. With consistent care and trigger avoidance, symptoms can be brought largely under control over time.

Topical steroids act quickly but carry a risk of skin thinning and dependence with prolonged use. At Clinovia we lead with calcineurin and PDE-4 inhibitors, ceramide barrier repair and phototherapy when needed. This lets us control inflammation without thinning the skin over the long term.

Yes. For infant eczema and paediatric psoriasis we use age-appropriate topical stepping, a moisturising routine and, when indicated, paediatric phototherapy dosing.

Our standard protocols are cortisone-free. We work with topical calcineurin inhibitors, PDE-4 inhibitors, ceramide-based barrier repair, NB-UVB phototherapy and biologic agents when needed. Cortisone is considered only for very short, unavoidable situations and with the patient's consent.
