A Daily Skincare Routine for Eczema

Eczema is rooted in a disrupted skin barrier and increased water loss, which is why daily care is the most important part of treatment. Choose short, lukewarm showers and use gentle, fragrance-free, neutral-pH cleansers instead of soap. Applying moisturiser before the skin has fully dried, while it is still damp, helps to lock water into the skin.

Moisturising is the backbone of eczema care. Products containing barrier-repairing ingredients such as ceramides and glycerin should be applied at least twice a day, and more often during flares. Generous, regular moisturising eases itch, prevents cracking and reduces the need for medicines. Testing a new product on a small area before spreading it everywhere lowers the risk of irritation.

Avoiding triggers is the second pillar of the routine. Cotton clothing rather than wool or synthetics, staying out of hot and sweaty environments, keeping nails short and reducing scratching all help. Known allergens, harsh detergents and perfumed products should be kept away; if the trigger is unclear, patch testing can point the way.

During flares Clinovia favours cortisone-free options: calcineurin and PDE-4 inhibitors are used safely even on sensitive sites, with NB-UVB phototherapy added if needed. Alongside this we assess systemic factors such as vitamin D, iron and thyroid, together with gut health. A well-established routine means medicines are needed less often and for shorter periods.
